This was a strange night in a strange year. I was excited when some musicians I knew socially had asked me to join them on this bill at (the sadly now-defunct) Divan Orange. The Montreal music scene had proven rather impenetrable to me since I had moved there six months before. The other bands' sets were definitely more on the ambient-experimental-crossed-with noise-rock side, and by the time it was my turn to perform, much of the crowd had given up (or gotten sleepy) and gone home. Meanwhile, I had a few pints in me and was ready to go for broke.

A couple of days later, a wave file of my performance arrived in my inbox, recorded straight from the soundboard. One of the perks of playing show with an audiophile, as it turns out! I was still feeling kind of bummed about the low turnout, which only fed the growing anxiety I was experiencing over where this whole Taperecorder thing was going, so the rare treat of receiving a high-quality recording of one of my live sets barely registered. Thankfully, I took the time to drag and drop it onto an external hard drive.

Eight years later, a lot has changed, and I can appreciate this set and everything it contains. I found myself both cocking my head and smiling at some of the choices I made improv-wise. I'm grateful to have this document of what ended up being one of the very last live Taperecorder sets, and now it's time to share it with you, especially considering that none of us are able to experience live music at the moment. I hope you enjoy.

about

Taperecorder Montreal, Québec

With his ramshackle, bargain basement, DIY approach to technology, Taperecorder's roots are deep in house, with nods to the punk aesthetic, early rave culture, and indie rock. Marc Francis cheekily infuses his signature squelchy beats with found sounds, acoustic doodlings, touches of glitch, and a naughty tale or two. ... more
