Cassette Tapes began life as a paid project for a sound design company. The company made loops and samples and paid me to create tiny 30 to 45 second-long "songs" to show the user what could be done with these samples. I made about 100 of them. In that collection of sounds there were a few that I really liked, so I put them aside with the intention of fleshing them out into full-length songs at some point.

That happened for a few of them, but the rest kind of hung out, sometimes impatiently, waiting for some love. Then I hit on the notion of turning them into a small remix project. I reached out to some friends, peers and even a few people I admired, and after a long wait (and goddammit Daedalus, I am STILL waiting for yours 15 years later) I compiled them and released Cassette Tapes. The only rule I gave to my collaborators was that their remix could not be more than double the length of the original.

After Cassette Tapes came out in 2008, I had a few songs left over and a couple of remixes that trickled in. I toyed with the idea of a follow-up called Cassingles but that never panned out. While sifting through my archives recently, I came upon these unreleased tracks and figured it was as good a time as any to give this funny little project a proper expanded re-release. The remix by Thee Taperecorders is a fresh as it gets – in a much-welcomed burst of creativity, it was done only a few days ago.

So, without further ado, here it is at last: Cassette Tapes.
