about

To say that North Country has been "years in the making" sounds kind of pretentious, but it's true. It's also true that it wasn't easy. I don't want to say that creating these songs was a chore, but the process was definitely unlike anything else I've taken on in my lifetime of making music.

"Many Moons" was originally called "Ten Sleep", and it was made during the same sessions that produced the last Taperecorder EP, Wyoming, back in 2014. I decided to keep it off that release in favour of having it start off its follow-up, which I intended to release 3 or 4 months later. The best laid plans of mice and men...

Much of my life was changing when I made Wyoming, and much more changed after it. I had established myself as the Friday night resident rock & roll DJ at a rowdy Montreal bar. I completely stopped touring and playing live. No more crazy adventures playing music for people across North America, the UK and Europe. Then, I moved from the city to a small Quebec country village.

And just as it did for the rest of the world, the pandemic brought even more change. The late nights disappeared, for one thing, and after many years of not knowing what to do with this unreleased music, it felt right to go back to it.

I liked what I heard, but there was something missing. So I reached out to my pal Williwaw in Glasgow and to Jonathan Segel (from Camper Van Beethoven) in Stockholm. They both added such wonderful, transformative new layers to the songs that I felt excited about North Country again.

Most of this EP was inspired by driving the lonesome (and, occasionally, terrifying) roads of America – roads that, under the current circumstances, I cannot and may never drive along again. My wife suggested that I make a companion DJ mix that not only captured the feeling of those drives, but sounded like the crackly radio stations that served as a soundtrack for so many of them. North Country Radio is a bonus 'mixtape' included with the EP.

about

Taperecorder Montreal, Québec

With his ramshackle, bargain basement, DIY approach to technology, Taperecorder's roots are deep in house, with nods to the punk aesthetic, early rave culture, and indie rock. Marc Francis cheekily infuses his signature squelchy beats with found sounds, acoustic doodlings, touches of glitch, and a naughty tale or two. ... more
